The play is one continuous blizzard of verbal abuse between Martha, the boozy and boorish middle-aged daughter of a university president, and George, her passive-aggressive history professor husband whose lack of career advancement she constantly belittles. In the wee hours of the morning after a faculty party, a straitlaced young couple unwittingly invited over for drinks gets sucked into the vortex of their dysfunction. An often powerfully understated actor, Beth Wilmurt is cast against type as the loud, “braying” Martha in a way that’s not entirely successful. Her delivery in much of the heated back-and-forth is strong, but her presence is curiously low-key for such a brazenly aggressive character. She finds an able adversary in David Sinaiko’s slyly insinuating George, his polite smile barely concealing and often accentuating his contempt.
